The first live performance Blake Judd & Nachtmystium performed after the infamous heroin years / PR disaster the band experienced in the early 2010's. After spending most of late 2013 through late 2016 homeless, in rehabs (multiple attempts), nearly losing both hands due to infections from IV drug use, surviving being shot at a drug deal in September, 2016 in Chicago and all kinds of other madness...to say this performance was cathartic one would be an understatement.

I'd have bet all I had in an instant on the fact that this would've never happened if you'd asked me back any time between late 2012 and the beginning of 2017 after I'd moved / relocated to California.

This show was at 5 Star Bar, Downtown Los Angeles, California in early June, 2017.

Line up consisted of: - Blake Judd (lead guitars & vocals) - COLDVOID ex-guitarist Jacob Dye (rhythm guitars) - COLDVOID ex-vocalist / bassist Austin Pumphrey - Current ENGORGE drummer (and previous Nachtmystium member from the "Worldfall"-era and who did most of the touring for 'Instinct; Decay' between 2005 and 2007) Jean Graffio on drums.

Promoted by Church of the 8th Day & Elegy Ensemble (cheers to you both!)

The band performed the entire "Eulogy IV" EP (except for outro track 'You Get Nothing), most of 'Instinct: Decay', the Nachtmystium half of the split 7" with XASTTHUR from 2003, and a Twilight cover. 12 songs, tighter than the band had sounded for most of our careers. This recording is quite good considering it's pulled from a couple iPhone videos and had a basic mastering done to its audio by Blake Judd at The House in the Desert in April, 2026.

Remix of 'Blind Spot' from the 'Blight Privilege' LP 2024 by acclaimed American hip-hop groove maker (and all-around amazing musician) Grant Benziger. Grant and Blake met years ago as Grant was a Nachtmystium fan. He reached out when touring with Yelawolf as his live-guitarist, having no clue that Blake's been a life-long hip-hop fan and is very much a fan of Yelawolf (and was at the time). The two met up at a Yelawolf gig in San Diego in 2019 and the rest is history. Years later we've finally begun what we hope will be the beginning of many collaborative recordings to come. Enjoy.

This is one of two versions of this compilation of alternative mixes / recordings and performances from 'Blight Privilege's creative process and recording between 2020 and October, 2023 when the album was finalized and became 'Blight Privlege' as it was shipped of to Ken Sorceron (Abigail Williams) up in coastal Oregon for mastering (and a surprise new bass track from Ken for better tonal quality)

Digital

Blake Judd's home mixes of the "Blight Privilege' LP, 2024, prior to sending it to Ken Sorceron for mixing at his professional studio (with his professional skill set applied). Blake Judd engineered the majority of 'Blight Privilege' and tracked all his guitars, bass, synths and vocals by himself, edited them and prepped the stems for proper mixing (as he's untrained in this area of recording at this stage in the game). However, that didn't stop him from making his own reference mixes for Ken to use as a guide of what the band wanted it to sound like in terms of where everything sat within the mix, vocal effects, etc.

Quite remarkable what a difference some of the tracks have. We hear this (as the band), as the more feral and honest sounding of the two versions. No disrespect to the actual albums mix, this was a standard set by prior Nachtmystium recordings that we were expected to live up to. However, being fans of raw black metal our entire lives more or less, we felt it necessary to put this out for fans and as a testament to the first album in 25 years that Blake Judd engineered and recorded 90% of entirely alone.

NACHTMYSTIUM are back! And after all that was said and done, mastermind Blake Judd is still standing. Not only that, but Judd has also clawed himself back from the abyss of a most extreme life imaginable to a much more quiet, observant, and matured artist and person. His return will not be met with universal applause – even from the black metal scene. For anybody following the tumultuous career of Blake Judd and his pioneering band that has pushed the borders of their genre into new territories, this comes hardly as a surprise. With their ninth studio album "Blight Privilege", NACHTMYSTIUM are once again presenting a masterpiece that can even compete with the trilogy of albums that many view as the peak of the earlier career of the American black metal (USBM) trailblazers: "Instinct: Decay" (2006), "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. I" (2008), and "Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II" (2010). Like an infernal sniper, every song on "Blight Privilege" hits straight on target. All the darkest elements, required and longed for, are there: harsh, rasping vocals, the fierce hum and whirr of guitars burning with an ice cold fire, moments of ecstatic and exalted beauty in hellish soundscapes. Yet there are also those fine details that the musically well-versed Judd has always cunningly hidden in the general sonic onslaught such as post-punk and wave elements, and now even a knife-tip of outlaw country. "Blight Privilege" connects NACHTMYSTIUM to its glory-days – not as a nostalgic reminiscence but as a forward-looking continuation and next evolutionary step. If anything, this ninth album is marked by a maturity derived from experience and learning. Judd's often diabolically catchy tunes are sharper than ever and have lost none of their bite. This might be due to the fact that it is the first album of the USBM spearheads which Judd composed in a fully sober state. With "Blight Privilege", NACHTMYSTIUM demand the throne of USBM back. This album clearly has the musical force and lyrical daring to do give credit to this claim. Love it or hate it, NACHTMYSTIUM have set a tall milestone with "Blight Privilege"!

Digital-only / site-exclusive release! This is Nachtmystium's career-long tribute to Burzum, the band that undoubtedly is at the core of the inspiration for Blake Judd to pick a guitar up and start this band.

Features:

  1. "Stemmen fra tårnet" (The Voice From the Tower - from the "Aske" EP. ) Recorded in 2004 by Chris Black at 1025 during the demo sessions for "Instinct: Decay".
Recording line up: Vocals - Neill "Imperial" Jameson Guitars - Azentrius Drums / Bass - Chris Black Originally (and only) appeared on the Southern Lord Recordings 2005 ltd. edition (1K units) of "Eulogy IV" CDs, and the 2nd vinyl pressing of 'Eulogy IV', released by (and still easily available) from Kreation Records.

  2. "Lost Wisdom" (from 'Det Som Engang Var' LP) Recorded in April, 2001 at Studio Hate during the "Reign of the Malicious" recording sessions. Appears on all versions of "Reign of the Malicious" and is the most widely distributed (despite being poorest sounding!) of the three Burzum covers we've done. Line up: Azentrius - Guitars , bass and vocals Noctis - Drums

  3. "Det Som Engang Var" (from 'Hvis Lyset Tar Oss' ) Recorded in August, 2014 at Belle City Sound during 'The World We Left Behind' LP sessions. Engineered and mixed by Chris Wisco.
Line up: Blake Judd - Guitars, synth and vocals John Porada - Bass Sam Shroyer - Drums

Previously only released on the "Retox: Remixes and Rarities" digital compilation put out in 2017 on Earache Records.

This collection is intended to stand as our monument to the band that started it all for Nachtmystium's core members in the late 1990's.
Hail Varg Vikernes, Hail Burzum!

Nachtmystium's second full-length LP from 2003, 'Demise', revisited in 2021. The original versions guitars and bass tracks were recorded directly through a Boss Metal Zone distortion pedal into a 16 channel Mackie mixer...and that's the "tone" on the original. At the time I thought it sounded grim (and it does!) but I've always wanted to revisit the recording with new layers of properly recorded rhythm guitars, a proper and audible bass track, some much needed EQ and compression on the original mix and then the final touch, which was the addition of samples originally intended for the 2003 version (we didn't have the technology to do that in the basement back in those days easily, though, so it was skipped.)

New art for this 2021 revisitation of "Demise" is done by longtime Nachtmystium friend and supporter, Laura Simon (Romania).

Privately released on DIY cassette by the band limited to 100 in early 2024.

NEW DIGIPAK CD EDITION W/SIGNED POSTER + ADDITIONAL INSERT, OUT NOW / JULY 2025!

The original attempted recording of Nachtmystium's debut album, 'Reign of the Malicious'. Five songs were recorded at Blake Judd's uncle's home recording studio in February, 2001. They were tracked on a fairly modern (at the time) digital 12 track home recording console. The band were displeased with the digital sound and returned to their rehearsal spot to record the album known as 'Reign of the Malicious' on their trusty Tascam Porta-02 four track machine that had served them so well on the two previous demo releases a year earlier.

Also included on the digipak CD is Nachtmystium's original track from our 2005 split 7" with Krieg, "Keep Them Open" (featuring MkM from Antaeus on vocals and the core members of Bone Awl as my bass / drum section), and then our 2013, studio-recorded cover of Burzum's 1992 classic, "Det Som Engang Var'', from 'The World We Left Behind' LP sessions in August, 2013.

Limited to 100 numbered digipak CDs!

Reformed American black metallers Nachtmystium have returned from the shadows on new EP, “Resilient,” their first for Prophecy Productions. Spearheaded by enigma Blake Judd, the reconfigured Nachtmystium picks up where acclaimed full-lengths “The World We Left Behind” and “Silencing Machine” left off but sheds unprecedented darkness on Judd’s artistic turmoil. The violent introspection spread across “Resilient”’s tracks takes Nachtmystium through new nightmarish landscapes as the group pivot into slower tempi with washes of melancholy as the main sonic driver.

Joining Nachtmystium leader Blake Judd are keyboardist Job ‘Phenex’ Bos, a Dutchman living in Bergen, Norway, where he moonlights with German black metallers Dark Fortress and performs live with black metal icons Satyricon and black-doom luminaries The Ruins of Beverast; bassist Martin van Valkenstijn, a Germany-based musician, who’s played live with legends Empyrium, Sun of the Sleepless, and The Vision Bleak, forms half the rhythm section; and drummer Jean Graffio, an American musician, is the other half. Graffio also drums for California-based black metallers Sumeria.

“Resilient” is the start of a new chapter for Judd and Nachtmystium. The EP kicks off with the title track, a full-bodied churn of sadness, desperation, and determination. The main melody is powered by a dreamy keyboard line with Judd employing a despairing riff as counterpoint. “Silver Lanterns” is more traditional Nachtmystium but with a shimmering centerpiece. Between the half-blasts and tremeloed riffs, the keyboards act as a foil, providing lift to the overall song. “Desert Illumination” is almost uplifting in its doom-like tempo and sing-song melody line. That, however, is crushed when Nachtmystium invert the motif for a more malicious coda.
